 Meet the Instructors:

 Mary Kay Shanley
On her way home from sixth grade one day, Mary Kay Shanley decided she’d be a writer. She began as a reporter for The Des Moines Register, immediately spending a day with the then-First Family, her baptism-by-fire assignment. Next came freelancing and authoring nine books, including She Taught Me to Eat Artichokes, a best-seller. At some point, she was invited to teach at a workshop and fell in love with the experience. An instructor with the prestigious University of Iowa’s Summer Writing Festival, she also offers smaller workshops. Mary Kay has a husband, three children, a granddaughter who just happens to be cute, and two Shelties who sleep under her desk all day long.

 Denise Holck
Denise Holck has been a life-long writer. After earning a B.A. in Economics from the University of Virginia, she pursued a career in corporate finance, honing her writing skills while preparing financial reports for her company’s senior management, the Federal Reserve Board, and the Securities and Exchange Commission. Recognized for her writing ability, Denise ultimately oversaw the company’s investor and public relations, employee communications and website content.

Leaving the world of corporate finance behind in 2000, Denise decided to pursue her love of language and writing full time, and earned an M.A. in English. She now enjoys writing on a multitude of topics and helping other writers with their work.
