Women and Memoir: Expanding Frontiers-Pushing Boundaries
October 2008 in Red Wing, Minnesota
It takes some special women to turn four days of discussion, thinking and writing into a lasting experience, but that’s exactly what happened. Here, from left to right, are women to celebrate. Front row: Judy Meisner and Jody Vorbrich. Second row: Sheryl De Mouth, Mary Jane Holm, Shoonie Hartwig [don’t you just love that name?] and Cynthia O’Brien. Heading up the stairs, front row: Mary Jane Brittain, Nawal Gahli, lucky instructors Denise and Mary Kay and Michelle Foster. Back row: Dee Wittmack and Elizabeth Maves. Missing: Carol Tershak who, sad to say, had to leave earlier than the rest of us that last day.

The 2008 IOWA SUMMER WRITING FESTIVAL
From left: Dave Clark, Ruby White Starr, Peggy Stortz, Naomi Kirstein, Roxanne Claire and John Peterson. Missing [because flood waters were rising]: Ann Page, Anne Powell and Carol Wilson.
The beautiful Iowa River which runs through the University of Iowa campus turned into an angry torrent, rising and racing during the first week of the Iowa Summer Writing Festival 2008. By Friday, the river was winning. At the beginning of the week, we tried ignoring the river and the rains, but eventually, nature had its way. On Thursday noon, evacuation of buildings began. By Friday afternoon, we were minus three students, in a building new to us and high on the knoll, trying to finish up before 5 o’clock so everyone could find their way out of town. No banquet this year, but so many memories of a great week spent with some very good writers!

From left, back row: Peggy Person, Jennifer James, Ann Rouse, Robin Kline and Jim Saul. From left, front row: the wicket instructor who made people tell their stories in 175 words, Kathy Adams, Mary Gottschalk, Deborah Jansen, Marsha Hines and Adele VerSteeg. Missing [and missed]: Linda Nies
For six Monday evenings during a very long Iowa winter, 12 of us discussed and wrote about such fascinating topics as where we are on our spiritual journeys, the emotion of place, receiving and being grace to another, and experiencing faith/experiencing doubt. Sponsored by Plymouth Congregational Church in Des Moines, our time together was wonderful, our assignments challenging and the church cookies just darned tasty.

Biker Women
This is what avid summer bikers look like when the weather turns cooler and you have to stay inside. Seated from left, Janet Holms, Carol Curnes and Ann Shuman. Standing: Kathy Matthews, Mary Kay [still trying to earn her Brownie sewing badge] Jeanne Rooney-Graves, Carolyn Lynner and Dee Fleischacker.
